Made to Order: How Each Piece Is Made at Linenfox

Made to order clothing developed very naturally at Linenfox. When I first started the brand, we simply didn’t have the financial ability to produce garments in stock. At the time, I wasn’t thinking about which approach was better — it was just the only way we could work.

Whenever we released new designs, we would observe what customers chose and only then move those pieces into production. This allowed us to grow step by step, without overproducing or holding unnecessary stock.

In the beginning, we didn’t offer options such as length adjustments or small changes to garments. It simply didn’t occur to us that this might be something customers would need.

This way of working comes with many advantages, but also a number of challenges. I’ll share both sides in more detail below.

What Made to Order Means

In simple terms, most of our garments are made only after an order is placed. Instead of producing large quantities in advance, we create each piece individually, based on what our customers choose.

One of the main reasons for this approach is that a large part of our orders include adjustments. Around one in three orders involves changes such as lengthening or shortening trousers, adjusting proportions, or refining small details to better fit the customer’s body. Making garments after the order allows us to apply these changes directly during the production process.

Another important aspect is the variety of fabrics we work with. We use several different types of linen, each with its own weight, texture, and structure. If you would like to learn more about them, you can read our guide to types of linen fabric.

Color also plays a significant role in how we work. Over time, we have developed a wide color palette alongside a large number of designs across different categories. Producing all of these variations in advance would require holding a very large and complex stock.

Keeping such a wide range of fabrics, colors, and styles readily available would not only be difficult to manage for a small business, but also far from sustainable. It would require significant financial resources and could easily lead to overproduction and unused garments. Made to order allows us to avoid this, while still offering variety and flexibility.

Made to order clothing allows us to keep this range while focusing on each garment individually, from fabric choice to final adjustments.

How the Process Works

After you place an order, the process begins the next morning with a careful review. We check each order individually to understand what the customer has chosen and whether any adjustments are needed.

Order Review and Adjustments

If it’s a first-time order, we take extra care. For example, if a customer selects several garments in different sizes, it may indicate uncertainty about fit. In these cases, we always reach out and ask for body measurements, such as bust, waist, and hips. This helps us confirm whether the selected sizes are correct.

In many cases, this leads to adjustments in the order, or even reducing the number of items. While this might seem unusual from a business perspective, it helps avoid unnecessary returns, keeps production focused, and ensures that we make only the garments that are truly needed.

If the order includes custom changes, such as lengthening or shortening, we carefully document all details before production begins. The garments then move to pattern making, where our team applies the requested adjustments and prepares layouts in a way that helps use the fabric as efficiently as possible.

From Cutting to Finishing

From there, the pieces move to cutting. Our team cuts each garment individually, following the adjusted measurements and order details. The process then continues in the sewing studio, where seamstresses review each order and follow the specific requests. During sewing, they double-check that details such as garment length match what the customer requested.

Once sewing is complete, we wash all garments in-house. This step is essential, as different linen fabrics and colors shrink differently. Washing and drying the garments before shipping allows the fabric to settle, soften, and reach its final shape. This means the garment will not unexpectedly shrink after the customer washes it at home.

After washing, we carefully press each piece and prepare it for packaging. Before shipping, we check every garment once again to confirm the correct size, color, and any requested adjustments.

What This Means for You

This way of working helps reduce the risk of returns. During busy seasons, our production time can extend up to three weeks. Waiting for a garment that long, only to find that it doesn’t fit, can be disappointing. By reviewing each order and confirming details in advance, we help avoid these situations.

It also means that your order takes time. However, you can be sure that several people are involved in checking it throughout the process. Each piece passes through multiple stages, from order review to final preparation, before it is shipped.

We do not pack and send orders without attention. Each garment is handled with care, and we take time to make sure everything is correct. Our goal is to offer not only a well-made product, but also a thoughtful and reliable experience from start to finish.

Challenges of Made to Order

Made to order is a more thoughtful and flexible way of working, but it also comes with certain limitations.

Because each garment is made after an order is placed, it requires time. During busy seasons, production may take longer, which means this approach is not always suitable for last-minute purchases or urgent needs.

Some adjustments may also depend on the design of the garment. While we do our best to accommodate requests, not every change is always possible.

This process may also involve additional communication. In some cases, we reach out to confirm measurements or clarify details before moving forward.

It also requires more time and attention from our side. However, this way of working allows us to stay in close contact with our customers and better understand their needs.

Some Pieces Are Available Right Away

While most of our garments are made to order, we also understand that sometimes waiting is not an option.

For this reason, we offer a Ready to Ship selection. These are pieces that we already have in stock and can dispatch within a few days. Customers choosing from this category can expect a much shorter delivery time while still receiving the same quality and attention to detail.

To make this possible, we produce a small number of our most popular designs in advance, usually during the quieter months. This helps us balance production throughout the year and prepare for the busiest season, when demand increases significantly.

For a small business, managing a high volume of orders during peak months can be challenging. The Ready to Ship category helps us handle this more smoothly, while also offering a faster option for customers who need their garments sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions About Made to Order

How long does made to order take?

Production time depends on the season and the number of orders. On average, it can take from several days up to a few weeks. During busier periods, such as late spring, production may take longer, as each garment is made individually.

The current production time is always indicated on each product page. Orders with adjustments, such as lengthening or shortening, may take longer to complete, as they require additional work and attention during the process.

Can I request adjustments to a garment?

Yes, many of our garments can be adjusted. Common changes include lengthening or shortening trousers or sleeves. All available adjustments for each garment are listed in the Sizing & Fit section on the product page.

To request a change, you can leave a note in the I need a custom garment field, which is also available on each product page. If needed, we may contact you to confirm measurements and make sure the final piece fits as expected.

Why do you sometimes contact me after I place an order?

We review each order carefully, especially when it comes to sizing. If we notice something that might not fit correctly, we reach out to confirm details. This helps avoid mistakes and reduces the need for returns.

Is every garment made individually?

Yes, most of our garments are made after an order is placed. This allows us to apply adjustments, work with different fabrics and colors, and focus on each piece separately.

What if I need my order faster?

If you need your garment sooner, you can choose from our Ready to Ship selection. These items are already made and can be dispatched within a few days.
